ReadMe File for the Hewlett-Packard HP-GL/2 Raster Driver for Windows 95 and 98 Product name: HP DesignJet HP-GL/2 Raster Driver for Windows 95 and 98 Version number: 5.00 Languages supported: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean Products supported: HP DesignJet 500 HP DesignJet 800 HP DesignJet 5000 Installation instructions: see detailed instructions at the end of this file Platform requirements: Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 SOFTWARE APPLICATION NOTES Large Paper Sizes If your application has a Page Setup or similarly named menu item, you should always take care when it is used to set a large paper size. ZoomSmart scaling settings in the Paper Sizes properties page may be active. If so, the scaling effect could generate an error message telling you that the scaled paper size is too large for your printer and that scaling will be disabled. However, in some extreme cases this error message will be repeated several times. After the final error message your drawing will be printed according to the Page Setup settings and with the scaling setting disabled. Internet Links from the Driver's Help File The driver's help file contains some useful links for users with access to the Internet. If you cannot link automatically to these pages, they can still provide you with useful information. The pages are: HP Home Page http://www.hp.com/ HP DesignJet Home Page http://www.hp.com/go/designjet HP DesignJet Online hpp://www.designjet-online.hp.com Timeout for Complex Print Jobs Complex print jobs may experience timeout problems. Under such circumstances, only a portion of the drawing will be properly printed, and the device will request more paper. To solve the problem, increase the IN JOB TIMEOUT setting available through the printer's front panel IO MENU. For really complex drawings you may also need to change the printer spool settings, as follows: Start -> Settings -> Printers -> Properties -> Details -> Spool Settings -> Check "Start printing after last page is spooled" Color Space You should select the sRGB color space in your application, otherwise hue casts may not be printed correctly. No CMYK path is available in this driver. If you use CMYK, your application will convert it to RGB; ensure that it converts to sRGB. Large Images and Adobe Applications Adobe Photoshop may have difficulty in printing large images at high resolutions or on large paper sizes. You can check in advance whether a problem will occur by clicking on the second pane from the left of the Photoshop status bar. You should see a gray rectangle representing the printed page, and a white crossed rectangle on top of representing the image. The white rectangle should be surrounded by the gray one; if not, your image may be clipped. To overcome this problem, first ensure that you have selected the correct paper size. In Photoshop, select File, Page Setup and click on the Properties button to set the paper size. If the problem remains, select File, Page Setup, Properties again, and then click Scale to Fit and set a 100% scaling factor. The printer driver will now report a lower resolution to Photoshop, which may enable your image to be printed. You may experience a similar problem with Adobe Acrobat. Choosing Standard Page Sizes in Microsoft Word If you want to select from a particular group of standard page sizes (such as ANSI or ISO) in Microsoft Word, you must first enable those paper sizes in the driver's Paper Sizes dialog box. See the driver's help file for more information. Keep Line Width When Scaling The "Keep line width when scaling" option in the driver's CAD properties page will not work if your application draws lines as small rectangles. This may happen with thick or styled lines. Wide Paper and AutoCAD 2000 If you want to print from AutoCAD 2000 on paper wider than 54 inches (1371.6 mm) using the HP DesignJet 5000 in Best mode, you must first click Properties on the Plotter Device page, then click Custom Properties on the Device and Document Settings page, and then select the paper size. If you select a paper size wider than 54 inches to be printed in landscape mode on the Plot Setting page, your drawing will be clipped. HP DesignJet 500 Printing Delay If you are using the HP DesignJet 500 to print a complex drawing from a relatively slow computer, there may be a delay of several minutes after the Spooling window closes and before printing starts. The Spooling window is not displayed with CorelDRAW, because CorelDRAW has its own printing progress monitor. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: No other applications should be running when you install this driver. We recommend restarting your computer before installing a driver. Your operating system should be running, but no other applications. Standard Installation for Windows 95/98 Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions that appear on your screen. If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM. Manual Installation for Windows 95/98 If you cannot or prefer not to use the standard installation process, you can install the driver from the CD-ROM by following these steps: 1. If the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by network without being stored on another computer, you must create a network port before installing the driver (consult your network documentation or network administrator). 2. Click Start, Settings, and then Printers to open the Printers dialog box. 3. Double-click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer Wizard dialog box. (We recommend that you do not use the New Driver button in the Printer Properties dialog box to install or upgrade this driver.) 4. Follow the steps displayed on your screen. Below are some questions that you may be requested to answer, depending on your system configuration. "How is this printer attached to your computer?" Select: * "Local printer" if the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by cable or network without being stored on another computer. * "Network printer" if you will send output to the printer via another computer. In this case, all settings for the printer are managed by a printer server that has been set up by an administrator. Click Have Disk... In the Install From Disk dialog box, enter the location of the driver on the CD-ROM (the same folder as this ReadMe file) and click OK. Select your HP DesignJet printer from the list and click Next. "Would you like to keep the existing driver or use the new one?" Select "Replace existing driver". If you are installing files for a new version and you see this question, we recommend replacing the existing driver. "Do you print from MS-DOS-based programs?" We recommend that you select No. Select Yes only in the case where you have an MS-DOS driver that can print to a HP DesignJet series printer. (c) Copyright Hewlett-Packard Company 2000.
