HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver for Windows NT4 English The HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver enables you to print documents from any Windows NT 4.0 application to a PostScript printer. HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver provides several features not found in the standard Windows PostScript driver, such as n-up printing, better support for printing the "euro" (European currency character), and greater support for many popular applications. This version of the Adobe PostScript printer driver is only for owners of English versions of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 who print to devices containing Adobe PostScript Level 2 or Adobe PostScript 3 or, if you received HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver bundled with an Adobe application, with any device supporting PostScript language level 2 or above. This driver is not for use with PostScript Level 1 devices. And, this driver is not for use with Windows 95, 98, NT 3.5x, or 2000. System Requirements -- Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (English versions only) -- Service Pack 5 or above -- Any printer that includes Adobe PostScript Level 2 or Adobe PostScript 3 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS You should have Windows running and all applications closed. We recommend rebooting your computer before installing a driver. Standard Installation 1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions that appear on your screen. 2. If no instructions appear on your screen, run the setup.exe program on the CD-ROM. Manual Installation If you cannot or prefer not to use the standard installation process, you can install the driver from the CD-ROM by following these steps: 1. If the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by network without being stored on another computer, you must create a network port before installing the driver (consult your network documentation or network administrator). 2. Click Start, Settings, and then Printers to open the Printers dialog box. 3. Double-click the Add Printer icon to open the Add Printer Wizard dialog box. (We recommend that you do not use the New Driver button in the Printer Properties dialog box to install or upgrade this driver.) 4. Follow the steps displayed on your screen, answering the questions as appropriate. Below is some basic advice for some of the questions that you may be requested to answer, depending on your system configuration. You may be asked whether your printer is connected directly to your computer, or connected indirectly through another computer. Select: * "My computer" or "Local printer" if the output you send to the printer will go directly to the printer by cable or network without being stored on another computer. * "Network printer" if you will send output to the printer via another computer. In this case, all settings for the printer are managed by a printer server that has been set up by an administrator. You may be asked the manufacturer and model of your printer. Click Have Disk... In the Install From Disk dialog box, enter the location of the driver on the CD-ROM (the same folder as this ReadMe file) and click OK. Select your HP DesignJet printer from the list and click Next. If you want to install several drivers you will need to repeat this procedure. You may be asked whether you want to keep the existing driver or use the new one. Select "Replace existing driver". If you are installing files for a new version and you see this question, we recommend replacing the existing driver. You may be asked whether you want to print a test page. We recommend that you select "Yes". By printing a test page you will test the communications link between your system and the printer. If you are sharing the driver with Windows 95 or 98, you may be informed that a file from Windows 95 or 98 is needed. All the necessary files are located one folder up from this ReadMe file, in the "Win95" folder. Installation Warning If you are using "Novell NetWare Client for Windows NT 4.30," you may not be able to install a Network Printer using this software. To install a Network Printer you must first switch to either the "Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Client Service for Netware" or a different or newer version (4.5) of the Novell NetWare Client. If you do not, you may experience a failure when you click Next after selecting Network Printer as your printer type. Alternatively, you can install a printer as a Local Printer and use the Ports tab on the Properties dialog for that printer to add the real network port. You can tell which version of NetWare Client you are using when you first logon to Windows NT. If your logon screen displays "Novell Netware Client for Windows NT v4.30.410" this version does not work correctly. You can also check your System32 folder for Netware.drv. Version 3.11.97.176 works incorrectly. Driver Usage Notes Support of driver features Some applications do not support all HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver features. Usually the application simply ignores the feature, but in rare cases, a printing error may occur. Application Driver Feature Acrobat 3.0x, 4.0 Rotated Landscape, Mirror Image, Negative Image CorelDraw! 8.0, 9.0 N-up, Scaling, Mirror Image, Negative Image FrameMaker 5.5.6 Rotated Landscape Freehand 7.0, 8.0 N-up, Scaling, Landscape, Rotated Landscape, Mirror Image, Negative Image PageMaker 6.5 Euro QuarkXPress 3.32, 4.0 N-Up, Rotated Landscape, Mirror Image, Euro WordPerfect 8.0 Scaling Workaround: Do not use these HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver features when printing from the above applications. Newer versions of these applications may resolve many of these incompatibilities. Layout View Problem: When you change the scaling options or the orientation options on the advance tab the layout view does not automatically update. This will not affect the final printer output. Workaround: None Euro Currency Symbol Some applications do not print the euro currency symbol correctly when it is available in some types of fonts. HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver does support printing the euro currency symbol when it is available in the font and can even add a euro symbol to many printer fonts that lack it, however, some applications are not able to take advantage of this feature. Workaround: Try alternate fonts that have the euro currency symbol or use other applications with similar functionality. Application Software Compatibility Issues Adobe Acrobat 3.0x Problem: When you convert a PostScript file created by HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver to PDF using Acrobat Distiller, if the original document had TrueType fonts, the resulting PDF file may be missing characters. Workaround: Upgrade to Acrobat Distiller 4.0. Problem: When you print from Acrobat Exchange, characters may be missing if you substitute TimesRoman with TimesNewRoman. Workaround: Disable Substitute With Device Font and change the setting to Download As SoftFont. Adobe Acrobat 3.0x, 4.0 Problem: When you print multiple copies from Acrobat Exchange using the N-up option, the first page may be missing. Workaround: Do not attempt to print multiple copies while using the N-up option. Problem: Scaling doesn't work if you select Acrobat's Fit to page option. Workaround: Scaling and Fit to page are incompatible functions; to use scaling, uncheck the Fit to page option on Acrobat's Print dialog. Problem: Rotated Landscape, Mirror Image, and Negative Image don't work. Workaround: These options work if you select Acrobat's Print as image, however, print quality and performance may be lower. Adobe Photoshop 4.0.1, 5.0 Problem: If you select Binary as the data format selection within Photoshop, you must set a compatible Output Protocol within HP DesignJet 800 PS3 Printer Driver. Workaround: If your printer is connected over a pure binary channel, such as AppleTalk, choose Binary for the Output Protocol option in the Device Settings tab in the printer's Properties dialog. If your printer is connected via a serial or parallel connection, choose the appropriate binary data format option for your printer: TBCP or BCP. CorelDraw 7 and 8 Problem: The Print Preview option displays a color preview although the printer selected for printing is a monochrome printer. Workaround: Whenever you are previewing a document that you intend to print on a monochrome printer, change the Color Appearance setting to Monochrome. After the print preview is completed, change this setting back to Color to get better print quality. You can find the Color Appearance setting by going to File>Print>Properties and choosing Advanced>Graphic>Color Appearance. Problem: Font CircleD, a Type 1 font supplied with CorelDraw, may cause a PostScript printing error. Workaround: Use the TrueType version of CircleD that is supplied with CorelDraw. CorelDraw 8 Problem: A Postscript printing error may sometimes occur if CoreDraw substitutes an outline (Type1) font for a TrueType font. Workaround: Install the TrueType fonts that you use in your document or specify substitution by TrueType fonts. Problem: Type 1 Symbol fonts supplied in the CorelDraw 8 package (disk1) are substituted by other available fonts when printing. Workaround: None. Workaround: Change the printer settings from the Print dialog box or from the Printers folder. Problem: The Copies option does not work properly when you use the N-up and Collate options in Microsoft Word 97. Workaround: Don't use the Copies option with the N-up and Collate options in Microsoft Word 97. Problem: Strikethrough and Double strikethrough positions on the screen may not match the printed output when the font selected for printing is a PostScript type 1 font that is available only on the printer. In this situation, Windows substitutes a TrueType font for display and supplies the driver with strikethrough and double strikethrough positions applicable to the TrueType font but not applicable to the PostScript font that was selected for printing. Workaround: When using strikethrough or double strikethrough in the conditions described above, select a TrueType font for printing. Problem: Paper size dimensions for PostScript Custom Page Size option selected from the Printers folder do not get correctly displayed when this option is invoked within Word 97. Workaround: None. Printing TrueType fonts Problem: Certain characters in some TrueType fonts may not print correctly when downloaded as outlines. When this occurs, there are unexpected white areas within the characters. Workaround: If your printer can accept native TrueType format, download TrueType fonts in native TrueType format, otherwise download TrueType fonts as bitmaps. __________________________________ c Copyright 1998-1999, Adobe Systems Incorporated.
